On a night in January 2021, the sky was filled with fine snowflakes as I walked to the nearby Tesco Superstore after work, as usual, to buy groceries. The temperature had dropped to -3°C, bitterly cold, yet the streets were still bustling with people. Their footsteps crunched on the snowy ground, and visible breaths lingered in the frigid air. This familiar scene gave me comfort, as if the chill of winter couldn’t dampen the city’s energy.

However, as I approached Tesco, an inexplicable unease began to rise in my chest. The sounds around me seemed to blur, and the once lively street suddenly grew quieter. At first, I thought it was the snow absorbing the noise, but the strange sensation grew stronger. Pushing open Tesco’s automatic doors, a wave of warmth greeted me, but the familiar comfort failed to dispel the unsettling feeling within me.

I picked up a shopping basket and started looking for the items I needed. As I walked, I noticed something unusual: the supermarket, which should have been bustling with customers and staff, was eerily quiet. Looking around the aisles, I saw neatly arranged shelves and intact goods, but not a single soul in sight. Several shopping carts were left haphazardly in the aisles, some with unpaid items inside, as if their owners had left in a hurry.

The snow outside was still falling, but a thin mist shrouded the glass windows, separating the outside world from the supermarket as if they were two distinct realms. I headed toward the fresh food section’s refrigerated shelves, only to find the lights inside flickering erratically. The pale light cast on the frozen goods appeared eerie and ghostly. I wondered if there was an issue with the power supply, but the pervasive silence and isolation kept me uneasy.

As I approached the exit, I suddenly realised that the entrance door had vanished. In its place stood a smooth, icy white wall. My heartbeat quickened, and beads of sweat began to form on my forehead despite the freezing environment. I tried to find a way out towards the car park, but the glass doors that once led outside had also disappeared, leaving only a dense, hazy mist in their place.

Time seemed to have stopped—or perhaps, more accurately, it had lost all meaning in this space. I pulled out my phone, only to find that the time on the screen remained frozen at the moment I had entered Tesco. No matter how I refreshed it, the time refused to move forward.

I began wandering around, desperately trying to find an exit. Yet, every aisle seemed to stretch endlessly, and the shelves appeared to form an unsolvable maze. I felt trapped in some kind of alternate dimension, my footsteps echoing in the vast emptiness as if emphasising the void and loneliness surrounding me.

Just as despair began to set in, a strange blue light appeared in the distance near the refrigerated section. Instinctively, I moved towards the source of the light, my heart filled with both trepidation and an inexplicable glimmer of hope. As I drew closer, the blue light grew brighter and brighter until it stung my eyes. I had to close them and shield my face from the dazzling glow.

Suddenly, a low humming sound filled the air around me, resembling both the operation of machinery and echoes from another realm. The blue light enveloped me gradually, and I felt an invisible force tugging at my body, as if pulling me into another unknown dimension.

When I opened my eyes again, I found myself standing at Tesco’s entrance. Outside, the snow was still falling quietly, and the streets had regained their lively atmosphere. Customers were pushing shopping carts, and staff were busy restocking shelves. Everything seemed so normal, as if what had just happened was nothing more than an illusion.

I glanced down at my phone, which showed that only five minutes had passed. However, the sensation of being in that alternate space felt like an entire hour. The silence, coldness, and eeriness of that place were deeply etched into my memory.

To this day, I still can’t explain what happened that night. I tried convincing myself it was just a hallucination caused by exhaustion, but every time I recall that blue light and the empty supermarket, a chill runs down my spine. Perhaps Tesco isn’t just a place for everyday shopping; it might also be an entrance to the “other world.” And I, by sheer luck, managed to escape.

After this experience, I no longer dare to visit Tesco late at night.
