Beginning

This story took place in 2015 when I was living in Australia. At around 8 to 9 pm on a cool evening, I had just finished a group discussion at university. I left Griffith University and boarded the 150 bus route, which travels from Griffith University to its final stop at Runcorn, passing through Warrigal Rd in Eight Mile Plains, where I was living at the time.

The Lazy Me & the Strange Bus

It was a misty and cool evening, but the bus felt warm and comfortable. This comfort lulled me to sleep, even though the journey from the university to home wasn’t particularly long. As I approached my destination, I overslept and missed pressing the stop button in time. The bus passed by my intended stop as usual, so I pressed the button at the next closest stop to home (the following bus stop), as I really didn’t want to end up at the terminus.

After pressing the button, I noticed that apart from the driver and me, there were no other passengers on the bus. Normally, the 150 bus route is quite busy at this time of night, but that evening was oddly empty. I didn’t think much of it as I was in a rush—my friends had been repeatedly calling me on WhatsApp to check where I was. They all knew I often dozed off on public transport. We had planned to have hotpot for dinner, and by then, I was already running late to meet them.

In the end, I managed to get off the bus just as the driver was about to start driving again. The location was 171 Warrigal Rd, Runcorn.

The Realm

After getting off the 150 bus, I was still a short distance away from where I planned to have dinner. The place where I disembarked was shrouded in an incredibly thick fog, to the point where visibility was almost zero—it was impossible to see more than 10 metres ahead. It was an exaggerated level of fog. (Imagine not being able to see your friend standing just a few metres away.) Moreover, I couldn’t see or hear any crows or bats (which are usually present at night, flying or making noises).

At the same time, after getting off the bus, it felt as though I had stepped into a world devoid of human life. The entire environment was cloaked in darkness with no lights; even the streetlights were out. I saw some cars parked along the road—some were parked normally, while others appeared to have been abandoned abruptly, as if the drivers had fled. None of the headlights or taillights were switched on.

As I walked back and looked around, the world remained eerily silent, with no lights, no living creatures, and dense fog everywhere. Then, as I turned a street corner, it felt like I had exited that strange world. Suddenly, I was surrounded by bustling streets again—streetlights, pedestrians, animals, and flying insects all reappeared. The fog had completely vanished, and everything returned to normal. I could see both my house and the restaurant.

When I looked back, I could still see the terrifying fog. It resembled an infinitely high wall, stretching from the ground to what seemed like outer space. I tried to take a picture of the scene with my phone and send it to my friends on WhatsApp, but when I opened the camera app, it only displayed complete darkness. The camera app was entirely non-functional. I believe something was wrong, or perhaps I had entered another dimension—a world I wasn’t meant to visit while alive.

Later, my friends kept calling me frantically, demanding to know where I had gone. They were starving and annoyed that I was late. Receiving their relentless calls reassured me that I had indeed returned to the normal world.

After story

In the aftermath, I felt as though I had spent a long time—over an hour—in that otherworldly place, but in reality, only about ten minutes had passed. During that time, I attempted to use my phone to take pictures in the fog, but the phone was entirely non-functional, with no signal at all. I couldn’t even use the flashlight function as the phone’s system seemed restricted. At the time, I was using an iPhone 5.
